View original topic: wiper switch wiring

I have recently purchased a NOS SWF washer/wiper system, which I am looking to fit into my 58.

The existing wiper switch has 3 connections

54d Black/Purple wire
54 Twin Black wires
31b Brown wire

The SWF switch/manual pump has 4 connections

54d
54
31
31b

I have connected the new switch as per my logic - leaving the 31 tab unconnected- but the wipers come on instantly, without the ability to shut off. - disconnecting the battery is the only way to turn the wipers off.
Without risking causing problems to the wiper motor - should I connect brown wire to 31 instead of 31b- or am I missing something ?

Thanks

switch...... motor
54...............54...... double jumpered to fusebox
54d.............54d
31b.............31b

According to the schematic, at least.
Make sure the motor body and switch body have earths.

Thanks Sputnick,

Just confirming that the 31 tab should be “earthed” ?
The wiper motor only has 3 wires in line with switch so do I need to give this separate earth as well ?

Sorry for all the novice questions- electrics are not my thing.
Cheers

I think because the single speed switches are unavailable you are using a 2 speed switch to run a single speed wiper and that's not a direct substitution. Here's a very thorough article describing the solution you need. In particular it talks about a loop wire between 53 & 53b that gives you two "on" positions instead of off-park / on / dead.

Earthing 31? I think yes.

In this picture from the gallery, it appears already bonded to the wiper case but without the wire earthing / ground is fortuitous and unreliable. The motor is mounted with rubber grommets to isolate vibrations and electrons too.

Success! I ran an earth cable to tab 31 on the switch only and the wipers work
On a single speed as expected. The early wiper motors have a brass earth under the mount so I didn’t run a separate wire.
Thanks Nicolas for tutoring me on this.
