Help needed, just spent two weeks on my CU engine after dropping it out of the van and replacing front and back oil seals , push rod tubes and oil cooler and the outer seal on the oil pump housing . After doing all that , and to my horror given the newly laid drive , she's dropping more than ever ! After a lot of lying on my back and pearing upwards with a torch I'm pretty sure its the oil pump gasket that's leeking and this is especially clear when the engine is running. I've read up on it and and most people recommend sealing the screw threads and using sealant on the gasket as well. ...which I didn't do !

Question is ,can I do all this without dropping the engine again out of the van, when I took it out to do the work, I removed the engine and gearbox as one unit, but I don't fancy doing that again and re-packing the two UV joints on the axles. I'm wondering if anyone has done this by just lowering the engine by undoing the four bolts on the main engine support and then removing the support to access the oil pump.

Any help and advice welcome and yes I know do it right the first time is my lesson learnt !

You should be able to do the job in the van, but you may need to remove the cooling shroud for good access. Also, the oil pressure switch and oil cooler are above and to the left of the oil pump. If the oil switch is leaking, thats a pretty straight forward repair. If the oil cooler seals are leaking or haven't been replaced and you have the shroud off, go ahead and replace the cooler seals while you are in there.

Don't know what it take to remove the fan shroud on a Vanagon, never tried it. To do it on a Bay is certainly a pain because you also have to remove the heat exchangers or remove the studs that hold the shroud to the block.

As mention the oil pressure switch is suspect. I have lost one on most every ACVW I have owned.
