I took last week off from work. I planned to go on a road trip with my chums similar to what we did last year. This year I couldn't go, so instead of moping around, I worked on VW stuff. My plan was to sand blast the chassis and inside of the bus. Matt, the owner of the bus came up to lend a hand. We used 800 pounds of sand, and made quite a bit of progress between rain storms:

While I was blasting, Matt got going on the rotisserie we had planned to make. There is still some blasting left, but we did make this:

Now the fun can really begin!

We had the hoops bent at a local fabrication shop. Each hoop is made from three separate pieces of 2" stock. One hoop had to be sectioned in several places to make it round and "flat." When we first got the pieces, I did not think they were going to work out, but Matt spent a lot of time configuring, and splicing to get the hoops where we could use them. They aren't perfect, but definately a step in the right direction.

I have the VIN stamping from the original piece. We are either going to cut it out and weld it over where it is supposed to be, reinsert it, or re stamp it. It will be there.

Moving on to the drivers side:

I copper welded the repair section for the drivers side fender. well While the paint was drying, I moved back over to the passenger side to start in that rear fender well:

I am going to cut the remaining flange off of the inner fender, I just want to make sure I get my radius right on the replacement panel first. When we were sandblasting, we postponed blasting the inside of the bus, and some of the rear sections to be done a little later. It rained several times while blasting, and the metal was flash rusting. Now all of the bare metal has been treated, there is no rust concern. Hopefully we will finish the sand blasting soon. Can't wait! :roll:

I really like this bus. I think it will be a good one. I don’t look for rough buses to work on, but all of the ones that come my way seem to be that way. Haha.

I think it was 18GA I used the same thickness metal that was there to begin with. I had to replace the same piece on our 15 Window bus. This one was easier to make with the cut in for the shift rod still there. I think I traced that on to the new piece of metal.
