i thought itd be interesting to start a thread on mix and matched parts used in builds. like maybe using honda rods or chevy pistons , or maybe motorcycle cylinders ? even just discussing ideas that may or may not work...

Ok then.

44mm Kawasaki throttle bodies and Ford ignition and Chevy sensors.

That's tits!

I'm running.....
chevy s-10 springs, ford ranger retainers, ford ignition module, toyota coil, subaru rod nuts, toyota rod bushings, porsche valve adjusters, alfa romeo carbs.

22r toyota valves can be used, keeper groove closer to tip.
I'd like to adopt subaru rod bearings.

My oil pre-heater is from Aircraft Spruce.

Lots of VW owners are using Alfa Romeo carbs, most just don't know it.

In my mind, "mismatched" sort of implies they don't really go together. So, are the parts really mismatched if they are sucessfully working together?

The parts don't know what engine they are on.

Mongrel or bitser sound a bit closer to what you're describing.

Deutz diesel cylinders ,103 mm JE pistons but the same as 4.055 mopar pistons , Ls2 valves and beehive springs ,911 Porsche adjusters . ford crank fire ignition . working on ITB's from an Arctic Cat 1000 ,modified to suit IDF manifolds .

In the early 1990's while visiting my mom in Bradenton, FL, the local U-Pull-It yard had a euro-spec early '70's Mercedes mid-size sedan. Had a pair of single-throat downdraft Solex carbs, 36-40 PDSI. I bought them for very cheap (maybe $20 each?), and disassembled. I remember the mating surfaces of the carb upper and lower bodies were distorted about 1/16" from over-tightening the attachment screws. I filed down the surfaces nearly flat, made my own gasket, and reassembled. Had a local machine shop rebush a spare set of Kadron intake manifolds to match the slightly narrower hole pattern of those Solexes. Ran them for a few hundred miles on a near-stock 1600 dual-port.

Does a 356 engine in a beetle count? That's been done once or twice...

earthquake Sun Jul 05, 2020 1:50 am

I have two 40mm Keihin CV carbs from a Harley motorcycle I am going to try some day on a VW, I also have a pair of Ford throttle bodies that are very close to a IDF flange size I would like to try someday too, I think they came off a mid 90's 460 in a F350.

And all those Porsche suspension/brakes/struts/alum trailing arms, gearboxes, etc..at least going back to 356 brakes being used on beetles. Is a 914 a Porsche with VW parts integrated, or a VW with Porsche parts slipped in?

I agree, mis-match is not the right term. Integrated? Assimilated? Adopted? Dating? Mating?

The point is that you're finding a match, not missing one. Car tinder. That would be awesome, a search engine based on all dimensional criteria in different engines, bore, ringn sizes, rod end sizes, etc..looking for matches.

Like if you typed in "92mm", Toyota pistons and stuff turns up. Plug in "VW spring base diameter", and all the springs with the same diameter as VW pops up. We would have found those beehives earlier

What about non-VW stuff MADE to fit VW stuff? I'm thinking Okrasa, Judson, Berg, CB, Empi, etc..Maybe that doesn't meat your criteria. But beehive springs should. Where does a Chevy rod journal fit in?

I once purchased a book titled "VW Parts Interchange Manual", or something like that....I was dissapointed.

Adapted? Repurposed works too.

When describing my pile....I use the term "mix and match" instead of "mis match"
