I have a 1974 Super Beetle Sunbug. I have read that the round VW emblem disappeared from the hood after 1971, when the Super Beetle bumped out the windshield and lost that real estate. I have experimented with attaching the louvers just above the rear deck lid and I like the look. However, I would love to attach just above the handle that opens the front trunk. I know that it does not keep fidelity to the model year but, to me, that round VW emblem says it all.
Has anyone tried this? Suggestions for mounting? It has three, unthreaded pins. It looks like those were probably cemented to mounting points in the old bugs. I suppose I could drill but I don't really like that idea, for water and rust reasons.
Thanks.

Get some "push nuts", in little drawers at Ace Hardware or similar.

The surface above the handle is too narrow for a badge unless you don't mind it having big gaps each side of the hood centre pressing |

The pins on the original badge went through holes in the hood and were held by plastic caps. http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=113853615 |

You could go with a vinyl VW sticker and not worry about drilling. |

Back when I was a degenerate teen I took a BMW round emblem and mounted it on my 72 Super hood. Sadly, the car was stolen by the degenerate that sold it to me. Silly me wrote “car payment” on the check instead of “72 Super Beetle” so the courts were of no help. |

I too missed having the emblem on my SB. So I tried the least invasive way to attach it on the hood by Dremel-ing out the bottom of badge to fit on top of the chrome strip and using silicone to stick it on. Not quite OEM, but darn close and pretty much the look I was going for.

Too bad VW doesn't use the symbol anymore.
You need to get one of these.

Not picking on what you did, but try moving the emblem down a few inches and shortening the trim, leaving a gap between the trim and emblem. Looks a little cramped. Again, I like what you did. |

From a New Beetle. Cut out of the blown airbag in the steering wheel in a U-Pull-It yard. A dab of silicone.

Hey Raydog. I agree with your comment. It would be better if it could be more centered on the hood. I agonized over having to cut and shorten the chrome strip, and with hacksaw in hand, I chickened out. I didn’t have any luck sourcing a shorter strip, so I had to compromise.
I think it looks ok though. It’s great to see through the windshield and over the hood with the VW badge gleaming in the sun. Just like the Mercedes, Rolls Royce and Mack truck guys. Just like it should have been all along. |
