View original topic: STOLEN San Francisco- White 1986 Vanagon GL Westfalia- FOUND

Update 8/19/20: We recovered the van today in downtown Oakland. This van is my father in law's and neither he nor I were aware that Vanagons are a hot item in the area. He does not live here and my experience with stolen cars is usually just teenagers out for a joy ride, not someone who clearly has experience stealing VW vans.

Anyhow, for others who find themselves in this same situation- look on local Parking/Traffic Authority websites to see if your vehicle has been issued a parking citation. This is how we found the van today. Also, if you have a FastTrak toll payment account, you can see if the vehicle has crossed any bridges (only in the direction tolled), which at least can give you an idea of its movements and thus a lead on where else to look.

In San Francisco, look on the SFMTA website:

In Oakland:

Man I wish one of these that are stolen had a GPS tracker so we could see how well (or not) it works in this situation...

No kill switch, huh?

Isn't this the 4th or 5th theft in San Francisco in the past week or two? One wonders if it is a trend or just the same guy operating on Vanagons over and over.

And here I live 30 minutes south of SF but never leave my white turd unattended in that town. But if I did, I have a GPS tracker and a kill switch. Sure hope the owners of this '85 finds it.
