I have a 1982 Rabbit Diesel Pickup with very low original mileage (18,000). I know these motors vibrate but, this one really rattles my rentnas. I've heard that installing GTI motor mounts can offer some relief. Has anybody done this, or should I just go with new standard motor mounts?

GTI mounts are the same as any other gas engine Rabbit/Jetta/Scirocco/pickup, the only mount that would be different is the passenger side for a diesel.
Look at your existing passenger side mount, if the brackets from the body are higher than the housing of the mount, the mount has collapsed. Unfortunately, the factory design sucked & a new one will settle within a year. |

The mount that really transfers most of the vibration is the rear tranny mount. That is the one that will make or break you. The diesel had a slightly stiffer mount, I believe, due to torque. It transferred more vibration when used in gas powered cars, but it reduced motor movement to. It was a good compromise over the urethane mounts, which are pretty much racecar only. The firmer side mounts transfer some harshness, but not nearly what the rear does. I always had good luck with the urethane front snubber and firmer side mounts and a stock or diesel rear mount. But, I've never tried this in a diesel. |
