Interesting shots. The last one inspired me to do some research to narrow down the date range. Beetle has the turn signals in the bumper, which first started for the '75 model year. The Wankel-engined NSU Ro80 in foreground was built thru '77, and the many Audi 50 or VW Polo in background were built starting late '74 for the '75 model year.

Both the exciting Ro80 and the 50 were designed by Claus Luthe from NSU at the time. I had the good fortune to briefly meet him in approx. 1989 when he worked for BMW in Munich and had the E32 generation 7 Series and E30 3 Series design under his belt.

rome - here's the site the photos are from

doesn't specify a date for that photo but has it after 76 when vw audi merged.
interesting about claus luthe and I've only just read this:-
Unfortunately, the talented designerís career ended very sadly and unexpectedly. Luthe left his post after stabbing his 33-year-old, drug-dependent son during an argument. One of the most prominent designers of that time was found guilty and sentenced to 33 years in prison. True, he didnít spend long in prison, and worked as a consultant for BMW after being released on probation.

I am also interested in nsu cars/bicycles and have owned a couple of prinz 4 and 1000 cars as well as an ro80.
in the 80s (when I drove it) there was still nothing like it on the road and the sound/smoothness was amazing. 20mpg was a killer though!
