Hi Folks...

I'm currently attacking a whole bunch of rust --- I know what I'm doing with most of it, but not 100% sure how to proceed with this seam rust. Last year I painted it to slow the spread.

Please correct me if I am wrong... my assumption is that first I need to go INSIDE the van, pop off the panel card, and see what is there, and then properly remove all the rust there and treat it... correct?

Then after that I should grind off all the rust on the outside.

Then finally with a very narrow grinder bit - remove all the seam filler in the seam, and replace that. Regarding seam filler, this is the ONLY seam in the whole van that has an issue... therefore I only need a tiny amount. What do you recommend. Is it OK to apply in there a good solid bead of silicone?

Finally with all rust removed and treated, and seam filler applied - then epoxy primer, and top coat - FINISHED

1. Remove rust
2. Treat rust
3. Epoxy primer over rust
4. Seam Sealer
5. primer/paint/etc

I used Fuser 129 seam sealer - great product and easy to apply. I know a lot of people here swear by the 3m sealer products. Just throwing this out there as an alternative. The sealer is fast drying, sandable in hour, really tacky, etc. My painter has used it for years with excellent results.

1: I'd steer clear of silicone, if you want to have any success with paint in the area.

2: add in there "zinc" or "self etching" to the primer portion of the question, and you'd get further before needing to re-do your repairs.
