Has anyone here swapped the factory EFI for an aftermarket kit and dual throttle bodies? If so, what was your setup? How did it perform?

Swapped for EFI but not dual TB's here:

Its a pretty tight fit, getting down draft carbs or bare throttle bodies with air filters under the deck. It can be done. It won't be cheap.

Something like this. https://www.borlainduction.com/weber-ida-replacements.html

Plus a standalone ECU system.

This is an idea that has piqued my curiosity! I've fallen down the rabbit hole pretty deep. I like the Borla IDA set up with perhaps some shorter manifolds and stacks (horns). Does anyone have measurements/dimensions for height from the heads to the deck lid?

Here's a link to a cool German company that has some short manifolds:

Here's an example of a wbx set up with dual throttle bodies, British Company Brickwerks:

If I move forward with this idea, my ideal set up would be the Borla set up with the short manifolds via Ahnendorp, and work with The Dub Shop on a WBX EFI setup with hopefully 1 coil/plug setup.

I really like the idea building a strong dependable 2.3L engine (which I have now) but opening up the breathing and bringing the engine electrics up to the 21st century, with ODB capabilities.

Keep us posted on your project developments.

sorry - late to the party
the 2.1dj WBX running DTA EFI is mine - it's just on the forum at brick-yard in UK

I ran DTA EFI on a 2332 type 1 motor i used in a samba bus I was racing and using DTA again seemed natural. Paul at vwspeedshop started developing a kit for WBX and i got most of the part from him.
42mm dual throttlebodies with direct to port injection, crank trigger, coil pack, DTA-fast ECU

after some tuning and bedding in the engine runs stong - some playing around with increasing the intake runner length was done as the engine was originally rebuilt with a 2280 CB cam with 1.4:1 ratio rockers. It appeared that this gave low airspeed at low rpm so idle emissions were too high.
swapping to stock rockers and adding long intake runners evened the idle and boosted peak power and the rev band.

akciddento,
Looks good! Did you try running K&N style filter pods directly on each TB?
I'm wondering if there would be clearance.
Have you looked at the Borla Induction IDA TB's?

originally it had these short K&N style filters - they just fit under the decklid

changing to 90degree silicon hoses to the collector pipes they had to be cut down a bit on the radius to stop interference with the lid ...

Akciddento,

Who's throttle bodies and manifolds are those?

Hans

They are VW Speed Shop.

In the USA Mario at dubshop is a dealer.

that looks nice! i can imagine it probably had a pretty tough to tune idle, especially when really cold.

How's the brake booster vacuum with this setup?

hdenter Thu Nov 05, 2020 8:31 am

It's probably fine. '72 bays have duel carbs with a similar vacuum set up for the brakes. Works fine.

tb's from paul at vw speedshop

https://vwspeedshop.com/product.php?productid=16759&cat=395&page=1

the brakes are fine - there is a vacuum line from each manifold
and i have a 24/7 engineering big brake disc kit all round, cross drilled and vented audi tt front and golf at the rear....

initially the challenge with the short filters and the big ratio rockers on the cam was getting good idle AND passing emissions tests. going to stock rockers helped airspeed and the longer intakes helped more.

possibly i will put the big rockers back on and see if it likes it...
