View original topic: Who has a 66 1500 6V bus?

Hi folks. I was hoping someone could confirm for me the generator length on a 6V 1500. I would also like to know what generator tin it has at the shroud and which pulley (both gen and crank). Im trying to replicate the original 1500 6v setup for my bus but the wide slot 6v generators are 15mm shorter than the 12v gens and Im struggling to find a combination to get the pulleys to line up.

Welcome your wisdom

Cheers
Dale

You are using a 6volt pulley I assume.

I have both available but cant see how it will make up the distance. I cant see how the 1500 6V engine made up for it either Hence the question about a true bus 1500 6V generator

My 65 produced 66 model had the large diameter 6V generator on its original 1500. It is the same spec as a 12V generator as far as I know.

My original SO42 Westfalia with a February 1966 production date came with the larger 6V generator which is similar in size to the 12V generator.

I believe the 66 gen is the same diameter as the 12V gen.

Did you look at the 66 owners manual?

Anyone got a part number for the fat 6v Gen? Were they common to other engines too? (Im only familiar with 36's) Next on my hunting list.

The parts catalogue says:

6V Generator 105mm Diameter

131 903 021
or
replacement type:
111 903 021 K in combination with these (wiring components):
111 971 945 B
111 971 949 (2 x)

I posted this in the gallery in 2009:

I believe it's 1966 only?

There's also this 50amp one but I don't know the exact application:

I see someone saying online it has a 90mm diameter.

I think this might be a regular Bus 1500cc generator, it's my spare for my '63 1500.

If you google the part # 211 903 021B I also see it listed as a Porsche 356B generator.

Same as the one on my 65' so-35 Westfalia with it's original 1500. These are normal small diameter 6 volt generators. My bus also has a 50 amp voltage regulator, and had an 88 amp hour battery originally. Westfalia campers and I'm sure some other special models used that 50a with the 211 part number.

I think all the other regular 6 volt bus generators are 45 amp.

Thanks Oakman and Everett. I think that I have a solution here. With the small diameter gen, does it have The older style smooth crank pulley? I have few b/w photos from the net of OG 1500 bus engines that show a smooth pulley, not the more common sectored pattern one. I tried one on and it ran about 5mm off the front of the case. Oakman would you please take a photo of your crank pulley and gen pulley combo please.

I believe the answer is Yes on the "smooth" pulley for the smaller generator but I think this is year-to-year change rather than anything else?

Here's my old '64 1500cc original engine with a smooth pulley:

'66 might be the sectioned one though, this engine in the Gallery says it's an original '66, although obviously I see an alternator instead:

My '63 has a dealer replacement 1500, it has the sectioned pulley

zimblewinder Thu Oct 22, 2020 10:45 pm

so the sectioned crank pulley would make sense if the 66 fat gen you posted above is longer in the body.
thanks for clarifying this for me.
