As to Mikuni carbs on VW air cooled engines, in the 1970s, I saw several off road racers using 4 Mikuni side draft carbs on curved manifolds. Most of them seemed to work well. But each one showed up before long with a single Zenith 32NDIX, like most everyone else. Never HEARD any complaints about the Mikunis, but they didn't stick around for long.)
If it was Mikuni carbs during the 70's, they probably came off of a big Kawasaki. They were the only ones who used a quad pack of Mikunis back then. They were direct control carbs with no vacuum lifter. Kawasaki started using vacuum lifter type carbs in around 1980. The biggest problem with multiple carb set ups, was the synchronization of the individual carbs. It wasn't hard to do but had a huge effect on the way the engine ran if it wasn't done right. |

All the ones I saw were pure cable controlled carbs. I don't even recall seeing accelerator pumps on them. Like 2 stroke carbs. And maybe that last is why they went back to conventional setups. |
