On my 88 westy, the transmission is almost certian to do a little grinding into 2nd when cold. I don't drive like I'm in a rush with it. I can get into 2nd without it chunking if I ease it when the rpm are low.
I don't want to burn the transmission on it. Too much $$$$ that I don't have.
Also, I thought of changing the tranny oil. What does anyone recomend putting back in it?

This is a common complaint when running dino oil. It takes a while for the trans oil to reach normal operating temperature. If it really bothers you, change over to RedLine MTL90. |

Where can I find the Redline at? What's the difference between the both? |

I've had good luck with other brands of synthetic gear oil. Mobil, maybe. I bought it at Advance auto parts.
It's probably just stiff gear oil in your case, maybe a somewhat worn out 2nd gear syncro ring, too.
If ALL gears scratch all the time, that's something else. Either the clutch dragging or the pilot bearing failing.
