  View original topic: Is it a card or a panel :-)

All these posts calling the upholstery on the doors a "door card" - I've always known them to be "door panels".

Is "door card" the new 21st century speak or am I just a big ol' redneck? (maybe one/the other/a little of both)? :-D

"Door card" is more common in Great Britain, and perhaps elsewhere in Europe, but the USA term is usually "panel." Don't get us started on wings, boots, bonnets, motors, stranglers, spanners, ...

Thanks KTPhil, makes sense. I got a chuckle reading that. I'll try and steer clear of any further opening of that can o' worms lol!

Yup, "door panel", but since I wanna' speak, the same lingo as everyone else , I now say door card - but then I don't know what to call the rear quarter panels - "quarter-cards"?... never saw that - z

Assuming this post might have been made after my recent one about repairing holes - yes, it is a door card to us Brits over here!

I read ya - was just curious after seeing the "card" mentioned a couple times recently. Just checking that I haven't completely lost my marbles lol.

And yet in Australia, we'd more call them door panels or door trim.

I do however feel conscious when I post whether I should change my spelling to suit the majority North American audience.

Pretty sure it comes from people that watch TV shows and pick up the buzzwords and lingo. Wheeler Dealers is a good example and it’s generational. Anyone over the age of 40 knows them as door panels in the United States. pick up any catalog or parts list to see what the correct nomenclature is.

Choose the the one that best describes what you are trying to name.

Panel;
1. a flat or curved component, typically rectangular, that forms or is set into the surface of a door, wall, or ceiling.
"a layer of insulating material should be placed between the panels and the wall"
2.
a flat board on which instruments or controls are fixed.

Card;
1.
a piece of thick, stiff paper or thin pasteboard, in particular one used for writing or printing on.

Door card;
A door card (in British English) or a door panel (in American English) is an insert on the door of a vehicle that covers the door's internal components.
2.
a small rectangular piece of plastic issued by a bank, containing personal data in a machine-readable form and used chiefly to obtain cash or credit.

And since we have a German car the Germans call it Autotürverkleidungen which in English means; Car door panels.

And yet the biggest (?) VW supplier in the UK Heritage VW, calls them door panels (probably because they are lazy and lift the TMI blurb straight from the US website). To me the card is the cardboard inside the door panel!

The problem with spelling and language(and grammar) is that it is constantly changing. Aussie’s moved from UK spelling and grammar with the advent of the PC where the default language is US English and people are usually too lazy to change it. This coupled with the shift to mother-****ing American movies from old British movies sees the younger generation unable to spell let alone know what a gerund is. Oh dear, I’m showing my age.

Next thing is that we’ll call it an exhaust fife.

Needing to fix some of the clip holes on my door card panels and ran across this ancient thread. Funny, slight up tick at the start of my day! I will be "working" on them soon.

I find myself picking up Brit-speak in regards to car items even living smack dab in the middle of Indiana. My guess is a lot of the vids I watch on youtube seem to be British,at least the car ones.

The phrase that always gets me is "Deck Lid" !! What's wrong with "Engine Cover". But I guess I'm just a boring old Brit !!
"Two nations divided by a common language" !! :)

But the one that really gets my goat (and I don't mean to offend our American friends) is why oh why is aluminium pronounced:

Alu-min-um not Al-YOU-min-ee-um

....when every other element of the periodic table ending in -ium is pronounced properly.

I mean you don't have a helum balloon, or a pluton-um bomb!

And just to show that Australians are equally to blame, why don't people pronounce the letter H as "aitch", not "haitch". There is no H in H!

I guess it won't matter much now as no-one will be able to speak or spell English as it will be taken over by text speech, emojis and acronyms.

Just chillin' and ROFL. And where I come from the F in ROFL doesn't mean floor!

'Nuff said!
