After searching for an hour, I still couldn’t find the answer to my questions.

I am building a 1968 Baja beetle. I’ve welded IRS brackets onto the pan, and I have chromoly tubular 3x3 arms. I am using a bug transmission. I was told that I can use stock bus axles, and swap the flange on the trans to an 002 one. Will the axle be long enough, and will a bus stub axle and its bearings fit into the hub on the 3x3 trailing arm?

I’ve been told multiple times to use 930 axles, but I know they are pricey, and I already have some bud axles and CV’s sitting around :)

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, please move it if it needs to be :).

You should get this moved over to the off road forum. Type 1 trans, type 2 cv's, pretty sure the axles are longer than bus axles. Don't remember the length, they were part of the kit I bought. Don't think bus stubs will fit in the arms. Try this

3x3 arms with a Bus transaxle use a 19 1/4 axles. A Bus transaxle is 3/4 of an inch wider at the CV flanges on the diff, so you would need an axle around 19 5/8 for a Beetle transaxle with 3x3 arms. You might be able to find a performance axle of 20 inches with long splines that you could trim one end, and recut the c-clip groove. Kartek Off-Road will modify axle lengths.

002 Bus CV flanges won’t fit on a Type 1 outdrive, so you would need CV cups from a Thing. This goes for the axle as well, Thing, not Bus. And I would get Thing CV joints as the have the most angle articulation of a 100mm joint.

Porsche 944 stub axles also work, and are easier to find than thing. Also, Empi makes some as well as the trans flanges. Moore parts in Corona, CA carries them, you can see them on their website.

Bus axles work with 2x3 arms and a bus trans
