Hey guys I'm having some electrical issues with my van and couldn't find a forum with my exact issues. Its a 1987 vanagon GL with the stock 2.1 engine. About a week ago i got stuck out at my school and had to hotwire my van to get home. It ended up being a ignition switch and i replaced it and everything seemed to be good. Then the amp i have in my van for my sound system blew a fuse and whenever i go to disconnect or reconnect the battery ground it starts sparking. It also just started to have vanagon sydrome. I started looking into this and checking the air flor sensor and it looks brand new and seems to work. I'm thinking that i have a short someplace and all of this issues might be related. Does anybody have suggestions for where it might be or a fix for this.

disconnect the amp from all power. it has filtering capacitors that have shorted and will continue to blow fuses. all other symptoms, including a bad ignition switch MAY be due to high current draw from the amp.

Agree with Danhoug. Get that onboard fireworks display out. Then you can start troubleshooting the engine electrical system without risk of an electrical bonfire due to that amp.

Well i took the amp out and took it apart and it seems pretty fried. I then took my van on a drive and everything seems to be good. I think that when the ignition switch went out and i jump started it it probably fried the amp. Then the amp was causing the wired rpm driving

If the jump start had fried the amp you’d have other issues. Amp went down first and took other things with it
