I forgot to order a gasket for the generator stand. Can I use a thin layer of rtv sealant or should I wait and order the gasket? Thanks

Don't use silicone, if it get in the oil it can block a oil passage and cause engine failure.

Are you using the metal baffle between stand and case?
If so, you don’t use any gaskets, just some sealant, not silicone.

Sorry but you still use a paper gasket above and below the metal baffle.

Don’t be sorry , you are just looking at old picture. The metal baffle changed from a flat to a raised ridge around the outside and that is used as the seal.
It the same idea with stock dual port intake gaskets.
VW did this change as the paper gaskets break over time from normal engine vibrations.
I have been building VW engine since around 1973 and remember seeing the factory bulletin when this change happened.

Gasket kits have included many items not always used on later engines. For many years there was seals included for the long rocker studs used only early 40hp and 1500cc heads long after they stop being used.
I would bet if your friend Russ (RIP) was still alive and told you the same thing you would believe him.
Do you still use the paper gaskets for the cylinders base? There in the kits too.

I build an engine or two a year and never had a leak from there so i'll continue to do what works... for me.

Yes you can use RTV. Different people have different opinions.

You do what you want Glenn, from my experience of building many engines that at the time period being used as daily drivers you did every thing you could to stop oil leaks. After you seen so many generator stands leaking from broken gaskets, when the new improved baffle plate came out you stopped worrying about having and oil leak start there.
And if look you may find others out there that agree with me and remember why the new improved baffle came with the sealing ridge around the edge just like stock dual port intake gaskets.

Actually for the first time in several engine builds I did use the paper gaskets that go between the cylinders and the case. I needed .003" to make a .040" deck height so on they went!

Many feel that paper intake gaskets are better at sealing than the OE metal one on stock engines.

I can say the same thing about the metal gaskets that many like to use them.
It is really hard to outsmart VW engineers and what they came up with to use.

Install'd a new alternator stand just today. Used the metal gasket with ridge, sandwitch'd between paper gaskets. Not worried about oil leaks, but how will I ever know firing order!!

Mr Goodtunes, with using a H5 engine you have more chances of oil leaking from cracks in case other then worry of your generator/alternator stand.

Air cooled.net, JBugs,and Kustom1 Warehouse in there online catalogs all say you do not need gaskets with oil baffle/defector that has the raised edge, just good sealant

The Mexican Alt stand has an o-ring seal on the bottom....it's a nice upgrade and quite reasonable since most originals have fillers that are rusted out.
