Ok guys I installed front beam adjustors and have them set at the lowest setting. I also installed the beam shims behind the bottom beam. The question is the angle of my steering column? It was in my dash before all this but I don't think it was right. Now with the shaft being inline the column is actually under my dash. I will send pictures tomorrow when I put my bracket in. Has anyone seen this or am I just messed up as usual. |

Make sure your steering box is mounted at the appropriate angle.
Otherwise, put your seat in and figure out where your steering wheel is comfortable for you - there's your column angle.
My steering coupler has a small amount of angle / flex in it. |

You can rotate the box on the beam to get shaft to line up with dash.
Loosen two bolts on the clamp and box will move. |

I would start by asking, what year chassis?
The king and link pin beams have steering box locating tabs that only locate it left to right and allow you to rotate the box to line up the steering box so the rag coupler is is not under any stress. If that is too low of an angle the long tie rod will hit the chassis to limit downward suspension travel for the right front wheel. That happens on my Mini-T and it seems harmless.
The ball joint front end tabs engage with the steering box clamp (also true for Airkewld aftermarket king and link pin beams.) In this case with the clamp 1 way it sets the steering box angle for the Bug and with the clamp the other way sets the box angle for the Karmann Ghia. For use on a buggy you may need to slot the steering box clamp for your required angle.
Or you could do what I did, modify a steering box clamp from a king and link pin car to have the notches where needed to make your steering box angle correct. The most important detail is that you line up the steering box to minimize any stress on the rag joint. Big angle changes may cause noticeable bump steer. If that is the case then you will need to make additional changes, such as adding a universal joint to your steering linkage. |
