So, I’m not sure if this has ever come up before, but has anyone ever made a beer mug/stein out of a cylinder jug? I’ve got a rusty one that came from a buddy of mine and I was thinking about bead-blasting it, carefully welding a bottom onto it, and possibly a top and handle as well. I suppose my question is, has anyone ever done it before, and what can be done to ensure it would be safe to drink from? |

If you can pull it off, I’m gonna send you a 94mm barrel.
I like big beers and I can not lie.
You other brothers can’t deny...
Make up your own lyrics from there I suppose.
How much beer does an 85.5 hold?
I bet if you put it in the freezer or a cooler it would help keep your beer cold longer.
Maybe I missed it but what to do to prevent rust on the inside? POR 15?
Mark, Are you talking about a ceramic coating of some sort?
Am I an idiot? Is POR 15 a ceramic coating or more of an epoxy? |

I would think a glass insert would be the way to go.
Just head to Walmart with your jug and find the glass that fits inside. You will look crazy but it's Walmart... |

Probably would be a good idea to insulate the beverage from the cylinder walls. Direct contact with a deeply finned cylinder will most likely result in a room temperature beverage very quickly.
Does sound like a fun mug though, there are coffee mugs available that look like zoom lenses for the photographer crowd, so why not cylinder mugs for the gear heads. |

Sorry for the wait gents. Work has been quite hectic. My plan is to either weld a metal plate onto the bottom, or glue (JB Weld) it. I’m not sure how well a hardened cylinder jug would take to welding on mild steel. Any advice is appreciated. Afterwards, in order to ensure it’s safe to drink from, my plan is to have it Cerakoted. I will likely think up a lid and handle later down the road, but for now I just want a functional beer mug! |

If you have a 3D printer, you can print yourself a cylinder with a hole sized to accommodate a beer can. It would be like a beer cozy. You won't have to worry about lining it, etc. When empty, replace with a new can. |

Actually, there is someone who makes cupholders like that already, should be easy to use them as a coozy...

I got some too. Painted black for better heat dissipation 😉
They’re actually 85.5mm and hold a Yeti coozie perfectly.
Somehow I don’t think any self respecting German would drink from a plastic stein. |
