All,
I guess no good deed goes unpunished. I just finished dipping my tank.
Came out great. All rust is gone. Flash rusting now, getting ready for Ospho.
However, it appears that the threads have disintegrated to the point it no longer hold the original cover or the new AN Fitting Adapter.
Any recommendations? I assume, cut out and weld a new NPT outlet?

Good gawd!, what did you soak it in and for how long?
I'd explore threading that internally and screwing in a fitting. |

Normal tank dipping. Not long at all. Had some rust on it prior to taking it in. I wire brushed it to knock off the big stuff prior to taking it. Apparently, knocked more than I thought.
Explain internal.

As in screw a pipe thread tap into the fitting on the tank so the inner surface gets threaded, then screw a pipe fitting into that. You'll have to do a bit of research as to the nominal size of the hole before threading to determine what size tap to use, you may have to enlarge the hole slightly before the job too.

Oh, I get it. Totally understand now.
I think for me, welding a new bung may prove more doable. |

Well, since I have decided to weld a new bunge.
Any advantage of directly using an -AN6 bunge vice the stock 1/4 NPT?
My only thought is if I wanted to ever convert back to stock lines. |

Update:
Weld -AN6 Bung Complete. Finish up tank this weekend.
I realize not factory. Plans are for pre and post filter for electric fuel pump. |

Update:
I lightly reapplied Ospho over the entire tank to reactivate it, waited a few minutes, and washed it off with Dawn and water and dried it completely.
I wiped it down with the xylene and then light brown lines started to appear. It kinda looked like surface rust. But I remember that these were the same lines that were there when they first dipped it.
The positive thing, that the tank appeared not to be rusted. Anyway, I soft sanded the the tank down to metal to get the brown lines off, then I cleaned with mineral spirits until my rags came off clean.
I completely dried the outside of the tank, and etched primed.
Tank Is In and Wired
One of the most challenging overall, but in the books. Completely flushed, painted, new felt, seals, filler tubes and clamps. Terminals all redone. Ground Established. AN6 Fitting. ATF preserving inside. Ready to take fuel. Have firewall powder coated grey. I will drill and Rivnut holes for Breather Box and Fuel Regulator before I close it (Hopefully forevermore ).
Big thanks to Ray and Bus Daddy keeping me on track! |
