View original topic: Steering Column Assembly Questions

This is another in my series of "I didn't take it apart" questions.

The type 3 parts list diagram shows this:

But this assembly stack looks more reasonable:

Am I close?

Also, I have nothing like items 28 and 31. And the clip that fits on the column shaft isn't on the diagram ... unless that is 28?

Also, the bearing seems made to seat on those ridges inside the head.

Where does the wire attach?

You need parts 28 and 31 as they are going to act like a seat for the thrust spring rather than having the spring set directly against the bearing. That along with the cancel ring washer work to capture the spring like a seat and hat for the spring. You should be able to get the parts from ISP West, they appear to be in stock.

Right now they are both "wish list" items.

Thanks.

We probably have them. I would call and ask for Alex.

those 113*** part numbers tell me they are also Beetle parts. Possibly scavenge those from a another more common column.

Ordered.

Clatter's thread link is solid, you should look through it. good info.

Here's a pic of the circlip and how it works.

Also, where the wire I think you were asking about goes.

Read Clatter's thread, lots of really good info in there and links to other good info.

Ohhh ... I had forgotten about that thread ... and I posted to it! :D

This picture from that thread does not show the lock ring and thrust ring parts.

Those are the turn-signal contacts. I'm asking about the wire soldered to the bearing shell. I'm certain it's part of the horn circuit. I have two bearings and the wires on both are in no way long enough to the terminal block.

The big thread? Yeah, I've been going through it and making my own collection of links into it. Good stuff. Just needs an index. :D

In this post

DHanna seems to indicate that the wire from the bearing shell goes to the terminal block. Looking at the schematic, it seems to wind up connected to the ground side of the horn, right?

That seems to be the right answer. There should be one inside the column that goes down to the steering flange and ties in with the main ground on the front beam. That's the one in the schematic that originates at H1 and has the 2 indicating its origin and termination point. The circled 5 is the main ground it ties in with. But that one is inside the column. If you look at your schematic there is one that goes down to that terminal block and then connects from there to the - side of the horn. This pic seems to confirm that it travels down the column from the bearing, to the terminal block. So that seems to be your answer, it needs to be soldered to the terminal block, then there will be a wire that travels from there to the horn in the front half of the harness.

That's what I needed to hear. Thanks!
