What’s the trick to removing the dome light cover in
my 70 Beetle? It feels as if it will break with any amount
of prying with a screwdriver.

| In reference to your pic, on the right side where the indent is, there is a metal tab that needs to be pushed to the left with a small screwdriver. While pushing in, gently pull out the right side only, far enough to clear the switching assembly. Once clear then slide the entire dome light to the right and it should be released from the roof panel. Reinstall in the reverse. You will see how the plastic lip on the back left side needs to be secure behind the roof first, then push up and snap into place . You may also want to disconnect battery while doing this so no wires touch the metal hole. |
