Good job getting the PR tube to seal.
I did try to explain the process you used above. I guess I didn't do a very good job of spaining. :? |

I was a buddies shop in Portland Saturday night.
We were there for a pre-Bonneville get together.
While looking at his car on a lift, I noted the PR tubes were leaking/weeping a little and commented on it. My comment got kinda blown off.
There was no way I was gonna touch that 2497cc engine without the owners permission well, at least until we get to Bonneville then, I can get my hands on his car and fix things that need a little help. But there's not much help needed on that well sorted car,

Sunday morning update!
I've been struggling with the jetting of the 45 DCOE on the turbo. At idle it peaks out the afr gauge and dies. I've upped the idle jets to "almost there", but it ran pig rich once i get it off idle. I put in some smaller mains and, again, it's "almost there". Enough so that it's time to go to the gas station, before I run it out of gas in the shop :?
Gently and quietly :-S down the street, and out onto the highway. In second gear with 3 pounds of boost it's spinning the back tires and hauling ass... I get third gear and instantly a huge racket that matches engine rpm. I know this can't be good... :x
Turns out it sucked the afr cable into the fan!!! Aarrrgghhh! I mean YYAAAYYYY! It's not engine damage! Trouble indeed, but easily fixed.
Be well guys |

Turbos are definitely the cat's behind!! I had never even ridden in a turbocharged car until I bought a new Z last year. These things are setup with 2 small turbos that start making boost very low in the rev range. In the brochure torque is shown as "350lb/ft from 1800 to 5400 rpm" [ the numbers make be a tiny bit off, going from memory here ]. This thing pulls like a big block V8 from low revs and is a banshee over 4500. It hits an upshift at 100 mph that snaps your head back. I got the 9 sp auto so I could experience paddle shifting. It's pretty cool with some minor downsides.
.
I had hoped to eventually turbo/EFI my 74 Beetle but life has intervened and ALL the VW stuff has found new homes and the Z is my last awesome car. So keep updating this thread!!! |

Update, Sunday afternoon.
I made it back to the shop and cleared up the wreckage of my morning attempt to get some gas. Removed the damaged cord and sensor element. I plugged the port in the exhaust and taped up the lose wires associated with the afr and set off to try again.
This time I saw the boost gauge hit 5.5 psi. (Keeping in mind that the boost controller is set to 7 psi right now) This is just stupid fun. Like an old dope fiend, I've had my first hit of a mind altering drug, and I want more!
Sadly, no more "tests" until I get a new afr gauge.
Have a great Sunday guys |

I liked and subscribed your video!
I used to have my O2 sensor before the turbo. Everyone told me that the pressure is a sensor killer. So I moved it. I can’t remember, but I think mine did fail. I does stick having it in the short exit pipe. |

Thanks John.
That's interesting about the o2 sensor. I'd not heard that before. :-k I'll have to look into it. I knew i didn't want it to close to the end of the exhaust, so I had it put in the collector.
I didn't smoke the sensor, (yet) the damage was self inflicted
Be well. Paul |

My new air/fuel meter from Summit came in yesterday. I purchased the Autometer brand... it matches the rest of my gauges. But the cable that runs to the sensor, is shorter.
The biggest part was building the cable extension to reach the back of the car. I think I finally have big enough idle jets in it to actually start "tuning" the carb.
Stay tuned! |
