While perusing through a few photos of members engine bays, I noticed a rebuildable style fuel pump sitting next to an Alternator.
Although my fuel pump is in working condition, and appears to be the original, or at least, a VW pump from that era, if I had to replace, I would much prefer to use a rebuildable Pierburg or similar, than anything currently being produced.
Anyone have any knowledge if this can be done WITHOUT a destructive mod to other engine components? |

The Pierburg "square-top" stock pumps (as bug models up to 1970 came with) work fine with the
AL82 Bosch alternators. It's possible the carb mounting nuts will have to be loosened and the carb
lifted a half-inch or so temporarily while installing/removing the fuel pump. |

Tight. But mine comes right off on my set up.

I do believe this is the one I saw.
Is there a PN to differentiate?
Any issues with a Motorola Alternator? |

There cannot be much clearance (if any) with the alternator.
Here are three genuine VW fuel pumps which I have, one for a generator equiped engine (non-rebuildable pump), one for an alternator equiped engine (non-rebuildable pump) and a rebuildable fuel pump for a generator equiped engine.
I don't think a non-rebuildable fuel pump would have clearance with an alternator fitted because the top is a lot wider.

| What about using a round top? I'd have to put them side by side, but I think the round top is shorter. |

No “destructive mods” necessary. Square tops work fine with alternators.
A couple weeks ago my gen shit the bed and I chose to do an alt swap.

| Pump shaft reverts to “generator” length? |

| The shaft length is determined by the type of pump. I forgot to put a square top and a round top side by side after work yesterday. Maybe today if I can remember. |

The square top Pierburg fuel pump uses the longer 108mm steel pushrod.
The issue with a non-slanted fuel pump and an alternator can be clearance to remove the fuel pump without first lifting/removing alternator or fan shroud. Some folks have used bolts to replace the fuel pump mounting studs.
