Very nice work. A lot more rust hiding than I thought there was. I guess the vandal(s) kind of helped you out, even though you didn't want to have to dig that deep into such a nice looking car. The engine looks good, and I like how the air cleaner conversion worked out. Any more info on it?

What modifications did you do so the "paper" element would fit?

I trimmed the ring on the bottom piece down to about a 1/4” so the element just sits inside it. And removed the whole section from the top the holds the mesh. I did have to tack weld the round top part to the cross piece as I ground a little too much off. But the element fits just right inside.

Ok thanks. Didn't know it was that simple to do. I have a Brazilian filter assembly that I haven't really found a filter element that would fit it, other than from a 71-74 Pinto.

Moe is back home from being painted. But of course, after I dug into him a little deeper, I found more rust issues in the floors. So new floor inserts, and the right-side kick panel needed repair. Fortunately, my friend Daniel Hood is very good at that kind of thing.

I am sorry about the paint stripper incident, but that is going from a decent Squareback to one that is going to be a truly nice car. Keep the pics and updates coming.

Agreed. With the new floor sections, and the repairs to the lower rear kick panels, it'll be a new car once it's put back together. 8)

I spent some time cleaning up the front suspension and flint clip. And refreshed the undercoating inside the front fenders and wheel wells.

Damn that looks good up front. Should be a long time before you'll need to get in there again. 8) Keep posting progress pics as you go. :D

Since the front suspension is all cleaned up, now it’s time for the rear. Pull the transmission and brakes. Convert to short axles. Clean up everything real good. Replated hardware. Put it all back together, and put the engine in.

I knew this was in issue when I bought the car as there was a large piece of sheet metal siliconed down to the rear deck area. But since I`ve been forced to repaint the car (which has already been done) I could not leave it alone. So, I pried the sheet metal up and found this. So now I`m looking for a solid replacement. And I`ve searched up and down on here, but haven't really found any in depth information about what's involved with the process. Does anyone have in depth pictures of the process?

Cut yours out on the perimeter and take it to a sheet metal/hot rod shop for duplication.
Might to be wise to make a cardboard pattern too before you cut it out.
They are a bitch to cut out!
I use 12" metal blades in my sawzall & a 4.5" angle grinder for starts/corners.

I still have the sheet metal cover that the PO made. So that would be a decent pattern if needed. So how much of the under structure will have to be cut. Or can I just remove the top skin only?
