Definitely haven’t been happy with the amount of air coming out of the defroster. It was working, but I felt it could work better. After searching the forum and reading a bunch of posts. I decided to tackle this job. I drilled a bigger hole to allow more room to work. Pulled the old hose out, vacuumed it all out and installed my new Contraption. I used 1.5” ABS from HD and 1.5” Carburetor pre-heater hose from Flaps. It was a pretty easy repair and my hands did not get all cut up. I will report back tomorrow with the results after I drive it.
1 3/4” hole was cut with a hole saw. I secured the ABS with a self tapping screw.
Upper section where I transferred from the ABS to the pre-heater hose. I secured the hose to the defrost inlet with a hose clamp.
The 60 year old hose did its job well
I wanted to add another breather vent. I decided to downdraft it. I posted about it in the performance forum and will most likely go with a stock oil filler in the near future. I used a small filter to avoid any debris from getting sucked up.

Before I left for town this morning I took some time and lubed all the linkage associated with the throttle because it was sticking. Carb linkage, pedal linkage and the cable on both side. It’s a lot smoother now.
I checked the fuel pump for oil blow-by at every stop today, I didn’t see any. So, hopefully the additional vent is doing its job.
The defroster was kicking! What I didn’t get sucked up with the shop vac, came flying out when I was on the highway. Considering I drive in inclement weather a lot, that was a great improvement.
That VS is sounding gooooood!

Should be around 3800 at 70 with the 205/75r15 tires and the stock transaxle. Cam should pull to 6000, so the specs say. 70-75 is about all it sees, that and a lot of rowing through 2nd and 3rd in town. :P
Temps have really dropped here and the Kats sump heater has been working excellent!

Miles and I drove The Monster to Purgatory for opening day. Well, opening day is on the 16th. But, we just got a bunch of snow and they opened a week early. They are calling it a “bonus weekend.” It was certainly a bonus, the car drove excellent and the skiing was also excellent!
Got 19 mpg on the last tank of fuel. Not bad considering all the warm up time every morning and I’ve only been driving it in town. The new defrost tubes I installed are pumping the heat! So far the frost hasn’t stood a chance. The real test will be to see how much better they work the next time it rains.
I’m digging the new amber LED parking light bulbs I installed. Here’s the link to what I bought, might as well cross post and put that info here too.

Since I had to pull apart the headlight assembly to install the new bulbs, I put a new plugs (if that’s what they are called) in the bezel and now I’ll be able to adjust the aim of the headlights better. I’ll do that later today when the sun goes down.

Switching to the 15/50 Mobil 1 was a good decision. This is the best hot idle OP I’ve seen with this engine. It also held a solid 40 at 65 all day today. :thumbsup:

Sweet, I remember the days I used to ski in the Sierra and Idaho mountain ranges. Loads of fun and quite challenging for a younger me.
What about the oil misting from the crank pulley that you have been dealing with? |

No oil misting from the crank pulley, I am getting oil past the fuel pump. Seems to be better since I added the downdraft vent, but I still see a slight amount of oil in that location. I ordered new fuel pump gaskets and I plan on resealing the pump when they arrive. That should have been today, but USPS mis-sorted them and they are currently on a tour of New Mexico. :oops: |

I'm curious if the 1.4" I.D. marine 'wet exhaust hose' would be a good replacement for the stock defrost hoses.
My thinking is that you could get the end that goes on the heater channel slippery with some dish soap and water, feed it down from the front trunk, then 'twist' it onto the heater channel nub without having to get your hands all cut up (kudos for avoiding those wounds).
You can get it for about $8/foot but it seems like it would be a 'one and done' job.

After an awesome morning of skiing with my son, I decided to reseal the fuel pump. I took it apart, cleaned all the surfaces with brake cleaner and resealed with Permatex Aviation and new gaskets. I’ll wait till the morning to start it, hope it does the trick.
Looks like oil was definitely getting past.

I just started working on my defrost tubing.. I don’t know how people are able to get the paper/foil tubes on blind, it ain’t happening on my end. I think I’ll drill out a hole in the a-pillar like you did. I can’t see a better way to get anything down there and airtight!
It’s good to see incremental repairs and upgrades on other people’s cars. It relieves the mental burden of having to get everything done all at once ya know |

I used a 1 3/4” hole saw to cut the hole and bought a plug for the hole from ACE. Seeing how the flange is 1 1/4” and I used 1 1/2” ID ABS I do not think I have a perfectly air tight seal. I did push the pipe down as far as it would go and the air flow is really good. |

I decided to remove the down draft. I enlarged the 1/4 NPT holes on the oil filler to 3/8 NPT, drilled and taped the 3/4 air filter top and ran a second breather line to it. All fittings and hose are from Autozone.

Car seems to be running good. Since it’s winter and I’m taking 2 months off cycling, I’ve been driving it everyday. No oil leaks or consumption. Planning to use my holiday tips on a new interior. Looking to put new seat covers, foam padding and a stereo system in. Possibly a second fuse box for the stereo and the USB ports. Hoping to do this work when I’m on vacation in January. |

Just ordered new upholstery for the car. Seat covers, foam padding and everything I need to install it. Also ordered new exterior door handles. All the ones in The classifieds are all really expensive, so I chose to try the repops.
