I'm in search of machine shop. Found myself needing to align bore/line bore my 36hp case believed to be original to the vehicle. I am in NE US but case is prepared for shipping.

Advice on a reputable shop with the right setup for the bores on a 36hp and the skill/ability to measure/confirm results when complete?

I had a great experience with my last 36er rebuild at Dougs in Mesa, AZ. Fish has built multiple engines for me over the years and I have always been happy.

We are challenged here in NE. Couldn't find a shop with 36 hp experience locally so decided to go with Joe Ruiz for my 36 hp long block build. Good luck!

Wanted to clarify that I am not looking for someone to build the engine, but rather a machine shop to bore the case.

In about three weeks from now I'm going to talk to a machine shop in Western NY about doing some case work. He's not a VW guy but he does do work on aircraft (Lycoming, Continental) engines. This shop has also done work for some early (1910-20s) aero engines I've heard. So at the very least the shop has experience with two piece aluminum/mag alloy cases. I'll let you know what I find out.

Someone just recommended Advanced Engine Rebuilders in Wareham, MA for VW machine work in the Performance/Engine/Transmission forum. enginesbyadvanced.com 508-295-2288

Dan, I bought a 12/54 case from you 13 years ago and had you ship it to Rimco for me. They align bored and thrust cut the case and rear main bearing I sent them. The quality of the machine work was excellent and the engine I built still runs excellent today. My recommendations was based on my experience back then. Sounds like things have changed since then. My apologies to the originator of this thread.

I remember that!
I used Rimco back then too, everyone did. Back when they were in Santa Ana I believe. It’s a shame that companies change ownership and the quality goes to hell but the name sounds the same so everyone naturally assumes the reputation stays the same.
