View original topic: Shifter Issue / Won't Fully Engauge 1st

I just swapped my 1600 single port and 12 volt transmission into my 62' Sedan and I cannot get it to fully engage into 1st gear. I disconnected the shifter coupler and can push it the rest of the way into gear but as soon as I install the coupler bolt it pulls it just enough out of gear to where it grinds when letting the clutch out. The picture shows the transmission in 1st and I cannot seem to get the shifter adjusted to push the hockey stick any further back to line up (even with the shifter removed). I did not have this issue when this transmission/motor was installed in my 62' Vert. I did install a new front transmission mount from JBugs and a new coupler off eBay.

Any ideas as to what's going on here and what I can do to fix it? Is the transmission mount too thick? Shift coupler incorrect/too short?

The later transmissions use a different coupler. Samba folks - could this be a reason?

WW actually shows the round style for up to Mid-64. Do you know what year the later transaxle is, it also looks like the coupler in your picture is hitting the chassis. The one Cusser posted looks like it might give you a little more clearance or you might have to re-adjust the plate under the shifter also. I re-read your post and saw that you tried the shifter adjustment......Hummm is the new trans mount thicker than the old one?

I used the same style early coupler when the transmission was it was installed in my Vert.

Coupler is pretty close to hitting the chassis but is not.

I unfortunately do not have the old transmission mount I think I left it attached to the old transmission when it was sent out to be rebuilt (that's why I replaced it). Maybe I can measure the mount thickness on my Vert to compare.

It's the new coupler... pulled the one out of my Vert and put it in and goes into 1st gear with no issues. The holes on the new coupler I bought must just be slightly off.
