The "Goof Off" seems to have more Acetone in it than some of the other stuff. The interesting thing is it dries very quickly and thus seems to stop working. Which has both good and bad aspects as you might imagine. Nonetheless when I am done with an area I spray it down with water in hopes of deactivating the chemicals.

I used it with just a cotton rag and rubbed gently until I started seeing the OG paint then I went very slowly and carefully from there.

Anyone have a recommendation for a stripper that doesn't seem to mind what temperature it is?

I've been using Citi-Strip and noticed how it's been decreasing in effectiveness as the temp drops. Does Jasco or Graffiti remover have those same characteristics?

I have been using Klean Strip Aircraft stripper late at night in freezing temps, works good I feel!

I brush it on, and have been using various combinations for removal, see above...

Since the top came out decent I started the bottom but it's looking a lot rougher...I'm wishing I never messed with it. I think a respray is in order. I guess I'll just hit the bare metal areas with some primer and leave it until I get around to painting it.

Oh well, ya never know till you try right? :)

Oh and for anyone who is interested that was all done with "Goof Off" and a cotton rag...in the thicker areas I did use a Scotch Brite pad but very gently.

Dan that looks fine to me. just hit the bare metal with some wheel polish or some paint matched to the turkis.

Thanks Jeff. I am going to keep working on it. I'll order some paint from Tower Paint and go from there...maybe it's just that rear corner that's down to bare metal. :)

Making some more progress. Still not the great paint I had hoped for but I'm kind of starting to like the "patina".

Thanks. Since this pic I have done the passenger door and dogleg all the way up to the nose, looks better than I thought...I really like the green.

I think I'm going to work on the driver's side next and save the nose for last as I'll likely have to remove the bumper and lights.

All in all I have probably 5-6 hours of actual work into the passenger side so it's not too bad...there was only one layer of blue to get through.

No, she's not really much of a highway driver (still has original gearbox with RGBs) and I am going to try and get up to your place and back as quickly as possible so I can tuck in my 6 year old.

stripping off crappy white paint down to OG Dove Blue.

Using 100% Acetone and lots of clean white terry cloth towels. 0000 steel wool on some stubborn spots.
rear corner and decklid show spts of sanding/ previous bodywork. I did a couple test patches on the side, nose, cargo doors and doglegs and it all looks like the rear corner. luckily the interior wasnt painted white, that will save tons of work. so far im happy with the results.

I have a lot of bare metal on mine too but luckily I have found zero Bondo and everything is pretty straight.

I switched form Goof Off to Kleen Strip Lacquer Thinner, it works about the same but I can get twice the amount for the same price.

Yeah Im using Kleen Strip Acetone. $16 a gallon from home depot. the terry towels and 0000 steel wool cost money too as they dont last very long.

I found the acetone works better the warmer the panel is. Its 30 degrees in the garage, and when i ran the torpedo heater to warm it up to about 60 degrees in there, the acetone really started to wrinkle the white paint well where i could wipe it off. no, im not running the heater when im stripping paint.

Whats been the solution for blending OG paint?

I can get rattle cans of Dupont paint mixed up locally, but what brand/ type is everybody using for a single stage paint that will match the OG laquer and blend well?
and primer i guess for this amount of bare metal?

So I continued on my quest for OG Paint...I finished the entire bus (save the rear hatch). Everything looks decent, except the upper nose which was so pocked up there was more bare metal than paint. And it wasn't even "patina" like the rest of the bus...it was where someone had wire wheeled it or something.

So, I made the decision to rattle can it with some L289 from Tower Paint (The entire upper portion of the bus is OG L289). Now the nose looks funny with nice OG paint and patina on the lower portion and a fancy, new rattle can job on the upper part. Oh well, better than it was!

I painted the emblem too as it was all blue mixed with some OG green and rust. I used Krylon "Hosta Leaf" which looked close in the store but now that it's on it looks more like Palm Green. Oh well! :)

looks good! Is the tower paint you ordered the Lacuer paint? hows the paint match? if you used grey primer on the nose, maybe you could selectively buff it too much, burning through it. Id be in interested to see some before/ after and blending efforts on the white top with the tower paint. im thinking about picking up some Beige grey for the top of my 66, and dove blue for the 58 posted above to see how well
