Hi Everyone,
The mirror glass of my side mirror has come out, thankfully all in one piece!
How do I safely/securely re-place it in the mirror frame?
I noticed a paper backing in the frame. (See picture.) What was the original purpose of this backing? The paper is flat, but the mirror mount is curved. How should I attach the mirror, and with what ~ an adhesive, etc.?
Or should the glass be fitted just inside the frame's edge?
Thanks for your help!
David

I've had this happen twice on my 1971 Convertible, but both times the glass broke. The first time was in mid-1970s, and I took it to a glass shop who cut a mirror to fit, cost me a whopping $2 !!!
Anyway, I'm going to recommend silicone glue from auto store or hardware store to glue the mirror back into place. That's also what I used to glue a new pre-cut replacement mirror over the broken one on Mr. Cusser's Yukon (she backed into a giant saguaro cactus !). Really. |

Double stick foam tape can work well, too. It is possible to remove it later if you needed to. |

I think if you are going to silicone it in you should use "Neutral Cure" silicone not the one with the acetic acid/vinegar smell just in case you attack the mirroring surface. |

I used some liquid nail type stuff for holding down quartz & Mirrors.
Loctite something or other.
Thought I got the tip from someone here on the Samba, but can't find the old post...
It might have been someone on YouTube.
Took 3 minutes, no mess, strong adhesion. Worked Great for me. |
