  View original topic: #2 cylinder running hot

it's on a stock 36 hp motor, valves adjusted to .006, distributor timing set at TDC on #1 cylinder with tester light on, oil just changed, oil filter cleaned and refilled with fresh oil, spark plug gaps set to .026, all cylinders are getting spark, carb adjusted for good and lean idle, no fuel smell at exhaust.

#2 is running hot as is evidenced by the high to the touch temperature of its intake manifold tube at that cylinder. all other cylinders have moderate to the touch heat at their intake tubes, #2 burns fingers in seconds. engine runs smooth and has plenty of power, car climbs uphill with no issues.
this issue appears to be an existing one as the #2 cylinder intake tube has lost/burned off its silvery paint due to high temperature and is now a darkened patina metal in color, other intake tubes are silvery in color as they should be.

what do you think it could be? thank you

It sounds like you are saying the intake manifold pipe that connects to the exhaust by the #2 cylinder has it's paint burned off.

This is not an intake tube, it's the pre-heat tube that connects to the exhaust.

This is totally normal and nothing to be concerned about.
The heat of the exhaust on that side can burn off the paint.

If it's getting super hot that's typically a good sign because you know the pre-heat tube is not plugged and air is flowing air through it.

that's exactly it, thank you! from i understand now, the lower pipe is the heat riser and goes all the way through connecting exhaust from 1 and 2 with exhaust from 3 and 4, to heat up the upper pipe which is the intake manifold to all 4 cylinders.

if so then the lower pipe or heat riser should become same temperature once the engine reaches normal operating temperature. so a question still remains, why is there a difference between the heat riser connected to 1/2 exhaust and 3/4 exhaust, shouldn't that temperature be the same? i'm sure i'm just not understanding something, please let me know. thank you

To be clear, it not the intake for #2, the larger pipes feed the air/fuel mixture to 1/2 and 3/4.

The smaller pipes only connect to the exhaust.

The right side is open right to the head where the hot exhaust comes out so it gets super hot.

The left side only goes into the muffler so it's cooler.
It's not open straight to the head like the right side.
It should get hot though after a while as hot air flows across from right to left and general engine heat.
But not as hot as the right side.
