I recently replaced the lock cylinder in the Vanagon. Everything went well but now I have a problem maintaining the steering wheel spacing to the column. The upper column will slowly slide down and the horn will start blowing when I turn.
What I've been doing is pulling the wheel, pulling the upper column back up, and pressing the plastic spacer back in place. This works for a few days and then the horn starts blowing. I pull the horn fuse of shame and go home and fix it again.
My question is this -- is the steering wheel supposed to make contact with the plastic spacer and maintain the gap? I have a Eurovan steering wheel if that makes a difference. |

The plastic bushing is sandwiched between the steering wheel and upper column bearing.
Two places to check are the 8 mm Allen that pinches the aluminum housing to the column. It positions the ignition housing. At the base of the column there is a U yoke with 2 pins. Both halves need to be contacting each other prior to adjusting the upper housing position. That said, I have no idea how a non stock vanagon wheel fits the shaft. Also, this is steering. If the U joint I described slips enough out of position, the steering shaft will disconnect and you loose steering control. I have used a C clamp or vice grips to hold the U together while I adjust and tighten the ignition switch housing to the column. This will bump your post to the top. |
