| Well I know it’s hard to discern a noise without hearing it but I could use some insights. My 1990 2.1 WBX had the alternator and oil pump replaced recently. I notice a high whine when I drive it that increases with RPMs. It doesn’t sound like a belt. I know the exhaust was removed to do the oil pump with the engine in place. It seems to run fine. Could it be an exhaust sound? Should I be able to hear the oil pump? The V belt was too tight for sure and now I’m having the water pump replaced. Could it be the water pump? Thanks! |

| Really! Still too tight? It's a high whine not a squeal? Could that sound be from the water pump or do you think it's the belt itself ? Guess I'll know a lot more after the water pump and belts are replaced next week. Apparently the wrong size belt was used for the alternator. Too small 1075 not 1100. Jesh! |

for the 5 minutes it takes to loosen the belt, i'd just try it. sounds like maybe you have a mechanic work on your van but this is a very useful DIY task that can save you some frustration. and most mechanics don't know squat about V belts nor how tight/loose they should be. everything they work on is serpentine. |
