  View original topic: EZ30 5MT vs AHU 094 5-speed - Bought an EZ30

UPDATE - Bought an EZ30, maybe I'll do another TDI swap in the future...

Ez30 pros - great power, smooth running, quiet with the right exhaust system, replacement availability for parts and engine.
AHU pros - good low end torque, good fuel economy, simplicity

EZ30 cons - fuel economy, engine failure means replacement.
AHU cons - less passing power than the EZ30, loud engine noise, the diesel exhaust smell, would need a rebuild and new/rebuilt turbo before installation (just under$2000 as I just did it to my Westy before selling it)

For gearboxes
Subaru 5MT pros - good for more power/torque due to gear sets, inexpensive part replacements from dealer/wholesale (except reversed ring and pinion), 5th gear can be swapped out without dropping the entire transmission (neat, but not a big factor)
094 5-speed pros - bolt-in and go with no propriety parts, more Vanagon oriented ring and pinions available for large tires and more weight (4.57-5.86), factory axle alignment, and readily available original german cv shafts.

Subaru 5MT cons - proprietary reversed ring and pinion, no full locker option, smaller diameter ring gear and teeth, custom made shifter assembly, needing 2 left side automatic cv axle shafts, $5600-6400 for a rebuilt transmission with ATB Differential, cv to wheel hub alignment is of by roughly an inch and limits articulating without 944 or 930 joints,
094 5-speed cons - part availability, part cost, gearset strength compared to Subaru 5MT, needs adapter plate for EZ30

Used EZ30 Engine, rebuilt transmissions
EZ30 with 5MT cost - $11,500-14,500 all in
EZ30 with 094 5-speed cost - $9400-11,600

Rebuilt AHU 1.9L M-TDI
AHU with 5MT cost - $11,500-14,600
AHU with 094 5-speed - $8700-$10,500

My van before the lift:

EZ3.0 can limit the throttle pull to save the trans and it will have the smoothness of a 6.
AHU if you have a dual mass flywheel could be nice.
I bet a Vanagon 5-speed takes some 'getting used to' but the 5MT would drive like a dream.
I have not heard of folks accumulating Van-miles on the Subaru car-trans.
They're out there I suppose (??) but I never read or hear of "big miles".
The VW trans goes something like 175,000 miles with reprehensible maintenance, think how far it could go if properly maintained.

Both projects sound real expensive.
Maybe you can sell the EJ25 installed,, that could cover a lot of the costs of the next project.
If you install it that could be worth a lot to the buyer.

It's hard to do a poll on stuff like this, everybody's guessing.
The only people who can vote with validity are those who had both, and you can count up to that number on your balls...

My conversion is for sale to fund the above project 😉
Unless I can source EV parts, but that's a completely different topic...

As for limiting throttle, that is with later EZ30R with Automatic transmissions only.
