Two things come to mind. I had a used inline 2.0 that I installed at 50 degrees. It had a heck of a time priming originally and after it sat a month. What I found was the gap between the oil pump gears and the sump plate was .007" of clearance. Using some wet dry sandpaper, some lube and a piece of glass, I was able to get the clearance to what is recommended. Solved the problem once and for all.

Back in the day, intermediate replacement bushings came in two flavors, one type needed to be sized after installed. The other type, were supposed to be the correct final diameter once pressed in. I always had my machine shop handle this step. These were for racing engines, so clearances were more important. I'd also have the machine shop install the bearings half off of the oiling port. This was to help ensure oil went to the bottom end. I also would restrict the flow to the head for the same reason. Good luck getting it back together.

Just got the latest big ticket item part for the conversion! I found some FAS aba carrier bars. Now to get them powder coated.

Haven't posted in awhile. Just moved into a new house and have been renovating it here and there. I finally found some time to press this IM shaft bearing in that I destroyed last time. It went in! My dad and I sat back and really took our time on this one and we finally got it in. The next step is to clean the block, and assemble!

Haven't worked on this project in awhile, but today I got the time to get a little further. I sent my engine cradle mounts out to get powder coated. After that I worked on my AEG exhaust manifold by removing the rusted studs out of the flange. Then I sent it off to jet-hot to get ceramic coated with a polished finish. Will post pictures once I receive these items back. In the meantime, I'm just trying to find the time to clean the block and assemble it.

Which torque specs do you need?

markswagen Mon Mar 03, 2025 5:27 am

on the engine, all of them.
crank
rods
oil pump
oil pan
head bolts
cam bolts
cam pulley
all of it, everything that matters, l got a kit, the engine had a hole in a piston, so l bought a short block, if l get of my ass and put it all back together it won't take up as much space.

vw62kid wrote: Anyone have any tips on what I should do to my cylinder walls during the cleaning process? I was thinking about starting off with dawn dish soap and a green scotchbrite. Do a light scrub with that then move to ATF with a lint free rag. After that finish it off with dawn dish soap and a lint free rag. Then lightly coat with WD40.

Hey Vw62kid happy that you are advancing with your ABA I was missing all the action of your series

I follow an engine builder, he is Dave from Daves Auto from UTAH and those guys spray wash the heck out the block after machining, maybe it will be good to give machining a call and just confirm if they spraywashed every oil galy in the block? this guys do it with wire brushes also, every single hole.

In regards cleaning, I do it with a towel, use lint free shop blue "towels" im forgetting the name in english lol you find them in autozone or any part stores and use carb cleaner to clean the cylinder bore and wipe it a lot of times after your towel comes out clean, after that lots of oil on pistons, rings and rods, Ive seen that these guys even dip the entire rod with piston in to a bucket of engine oil. Dont know if engine assembly lube is better excuse my inexpierence but Dave is old style and does guys do a prestine job. Check it out in youtube Daves Auto from Utah.

Sweet!

I was looking for those supports for ever! and never found them when I looked and had to stick with the 15 degrees setup that I just had. Just found them from a few sellers. Theres one here in the samba clasifieds for 1200-1500 adapter plate included thats the one to go to but I prefer to buy new. If you would need them new, Europe is your best bet. Unless theres more option here in America, maybe FAS?

I may need to keep this in mind for the next swap! I have a buddy who fabricates these Mounts for a very reasonable price.

Just got my engine cradle bars back from powder coating! Put them in my garage right next to another, smaller project I've been working on lately.

Just got my exhaust manifold back from ceramic coating. It looks amazing!

Wow looking awesome!

Im starting again with mine, blown piston and God knows how many damages in the interior of the engine... ill post photos in my thread once I start. Will start with the spare cylinder head that I got just did my Subaru heads on the Outback and it was ok. Seems that the 2.0 heads of my ABA don't seem to be difficult. Will send it out to machine surface.

Keep up the good work!

And I checked pincheallsgarage manuals but the ABA is incomplete... bummer... the cylinder head section for the 4 cylinder engine is missing... :D :D :D :D If anyone has that section they will greatly appreciate it! (That who says never... it will happen lol) now im looking for a manual. Time to get back to the wagon, Subaru is not yet for me $$$$ but in the future will install all the bells and wistles

Ahh man that's a bummer to hear. Have you made any progress on it since then?
