| '86s came with 2.1L WBX (there are no 2.0 WBX, earlier is the 1.9). Not tough if you have the basic tools and DIY experience. I've been out of the WBX world for quite a while so I'll let others point to the best bets for replacement 2.1 engines. Definitely do not want a 1.9L, the cooling system is different, and poorer, and the 2.1 is really the least HP you'd want. |

Pretty easy DIY to change the engine.
Especially an original engine, its like a half a day if you don't have other things to do.
For an experienced person, usually longer for first timer.
And "if you don't have other things to do" is usually not applicable.
Get a 2.1L for sure.
If you have patience you can find good "takeout" engines in some parts of the USA 'cuz lots of folks are swapping in Subarus, Fords etc.
Subaru are plentiful in the USA.
If your trans is "loose", a Subaru with double the HP, will eat it for lunch.
The trans has a well-known component that fails around 150,000 miles.
It's called the "3rd/4th slider hub".
Theres some chance your trans has had it replaced already.
It's kind of like a timing-belt, you wanna change it before it breaks.
Requires a transaxle specialist, not a DIY item.
There's no way to check if it's been replaced other than complete disassembly.
Be forewarned, the VW owners manual maintenance ends at 90,000 miles and they stated that gear oil did not need to be changed in that interval.
Which was true, the trans still works after 90k on bad oil, but it's injured by the lack of maintenance.
Problem is, since there's not even one word how to change the gear oil in the manuals, so even after 90,000 miles many didn't change the gear oil until the trans was ruined.
Then they're trying to heal it with special elixirs.
How many miles does the Odometer show? |
