I would recommend bending the angled tip to more of a 90*. Many times, over the years, the tip has ovaled the hole and it can pull through when you step on the gas.

Considering that these are 50 year old cars, if the hole is oval, maybe is time to replace the part.

A lot more complicated since you have to remove the cluster and disconnect the clutch cable. At that point you might as well rebuild it.

Old cars are like an onion, peel a layer and then there's another.
