I’ve recently purchased a 1998 VW super beatle convertible in Mexico. It has original paperwork from the factory. In reviewing VW on line history, this car shouldn’t exist. The last Bug convertibles are supposed to have ended in 1979/80.
Does anyone have an idea how to trace the I’d numbers to verify?

We sold a number of “rough” non running convertibles to Mexico back in the day and the purchaser was going to graft the rear section, doors, windshield frames of the car to New cars built in Mexico and sell them to the well off in Mexico as it was considered a status symbol there…could be one of these cars..

Thanks It's possible it is titled with the wrong year/typo at the DMV. I've seen it before. Please post a picture. Also as soon as you said super beetle, something is off. There were none in 1998, only standard beetles produced in Mexico |
