Has anyone else had trouble removing the transmission gear case? It moves about 1/8 to 1/4 inch and stops, hard. I've had this apart previously to replace gaskets and now it's popping out of fourth. I've tried the lever method, bottle jack, floor jack, and even reversing the bolts to push it out.

shifter coupling disconnected?

Shift coupler is a good call out that folks forget.

Also the ground strap sometimes hangs up even with the bolts removed.

The starter cables/wires should be removed or the starter itself unbolted.

Other than that it's really just the two big bolts on the frame horns, and the small bolts at the front mount. I'm also assuming the CV joints/axles have been removed or unbolted.

Best of luck!

The transaxle came out fine, it's on my bench. The Gear shift housing came off fine. The Gear carrier is what's stuck.

Did you remove the differential, separate the input shaft coupler & circlips?

Differential is out. 4 bolts are out on the inside. 9 bolts are off the outside. I'm at the point where the manual shows a lever pn vw 296 pressing out the transmission gears from the case.

the transaxle is as complex as Swiss watch with tools that will cost you more than paying somebody else to do it.
