Did ya have time to check if the 944 flange will work? |

Still in a deepfreeze here and snowing now. Supposed to moderate in the next day or two so I will jack it out of the snow bank when it does. Meanwhile I can remove the swing axle and get things prepped for the change over. |

Call me cheap.
I took the nose cone back off to do the farmer fix and guess what? The nose cone does cover the bearing race!
You can see the imprint of the race in the silicone. False alarm! Ah well! Better to have checked it out. No harm in that.
Totally missing the the bottom bearing, which is just a press fit and wonders on the shaft without the tang to hold it in place.

See the two retaining tangs sticking out to pick up the floating bearing? |

Ok, right! The little bearing. This shows the big bearing having the added retaining bolt.

It's still open so I can do that to the little one if I am careful where I drill. Thanks! |

I used the stock 3 bolt nose on mine ,I don't even have a front mount, just a Mid mount , so If ya have a welded mid mount ,,,, ya don't need the front
Oh and It's tropical down here with 15*f this morning  |

This is the nose cone the transaxle came with. I don't have a newer one but this fits my Buggy so I will work with it. I have a solid rear mount and the rubber front mount, no mid mount. I really have no need for anything more. I am highly allergic to hard launches. They make my wallet sneeze!
The weather has improved here overnight too. It's still snowing lightly but up to - 12*C so I could see myself getting a pair of tires on the 944 today. It's going into my neighbor's shop, mine only has room for one car at a time and the Buggy is in there. I will give him a call today and see if he is ready for it yet. |

He lives about 6 miles away and has a nice big shop. At present he it setting up a paint booth! :D We have been trading TDI parts and parts cars for several years now. He is the one that wants to make a race car out of this 944 so it's going there anyway. |

I put the cross shaft in yesterday but noticed that the clutch lever comes in a short and long version. I used the long one, anyone see a problem with that choice? |

Only potential issue depends on your buggy body. Some bodies have a package trey that is very low and can hit the longer throw out arms. If it does not hit, I always recommend using the longer arm, and I actually lengthen the smaller shaft arms to the length of the long large shaft arms. |

If the 944 flanges don't work for you , u can always run stock type 1, since u don't do drag starts , hill climbs with hugh paddle tires etc. ,,Spring is just around the corner  |

It's not the strength I need at all. The reason for the change over is so that I can use the 944 rear brakes and the Fuchs wheels. |

The only difference between a 944 and the Type I stub axles is the CV flange. If you do not need the strength of the cv’s, you do not need to change the flange on the trans or the axle stub. |

Yes so one end or the other needs to be changed if I use the 944 trailing arms and brakes. It just seems simpler to change the flanges at the transaxle. If I change the stub axles then I need to buy those and a set of axles. If I go with the 944 axles all I need is the flanges for the transaxle.
Or are you saying that the axles have the same spline and I can use 944 CV on the outer end and Type 1 CV in the inner end? That seems highly unlikely. |

The flange on the 944 stub axle is larger to fit the bigger cv. The spline count, thread length, spline length and overall length are all the same as the VW type 1.
But the correct, easy way is to swap the entire arm from a type I to the 944. That way no fab welding needs done to hold the caliper.
If you run Type I inner cv’s and 944 outside cv’s, pay super close attention to properly clocking the cv’s. If they are just one spline off, the 944 cv will beat up the Type I cv. |

Ok, I think I follow all that but... I do not have any type 1 IRS parts to work with at the moment, just this late transaxle I bought. If you check back on my previous posts you will see that I presently have a swing axle and am using the 944 as a parts source to change over to IRS with the advantage that I get rear disc brakes and can use the Fuchs wheels that came on the 944. I want to make use of what I have wherever possible.
Tell me more about how to clock CV joints properly I think I know but just update my memory please. |

Yee haa! I found the IRS conversion brackets I bought several years ago for this job. Several garage and storage area revamps have happened since and I was not sure... but here they are!
Interesting... these brackets are known to cause cancer and birth defects in the state of California. Dam glad I don't live there! Using them might be too risky if I did! |

The pivot jigs from CIP1 showed up yesterday, free shipping, from 15 hours away! $121.19 total. So why is it that Concept 1 needs $42 to ship a $13 tube 12" long 3 hours to me? Ok, I get that they can't do it for free but $42??!!
So my daughter goes to Concept 1 in Calgary to buy my $13 Bowdon tube for me and they turn her away! No we do not do across the counter sales, you have to order it on line! In the same city!! Go home and order it, make arrangements and we will bring it to you in the parking lot. WTH is their problem? COVID is done! |
