I have never been able to find the production numbers for the Sun Bug models. I just read this Jalopnik feature that stated "about 300" to be the production number for the Sun Bugs. I expect this number includes all models (standard Beetle which came without the wind deflector, Super Beetle and Sun Bug convertible).
I own the Garwood books and surprisingly, he gave no production numbers for the Sun Bug, as he did with some models.
Who knows the production numbers for Sun Bugs? Should we create a Sun Bug registry?

Garwood stated in The Car of the Century that the standard Beetle Sun Bugs were the most common, but that still gives no numbers. I'm now considering contacting the VW Stiftung Auto Museum and inquiring to see if they are able to provide any numbers. |

I found this on Barrett-Jackson. This convertible Sun Bug is claimed to be one of 164 produced. I feel safe in assuming that this 164 figure represents the convertible portion of the claimed 300 Sun Bugs built.
