Painting Door Handles - What sheen Gloss, Semi Gloss, Satin?

Thinking Gloss will be easiest to keep clean. Semi or Satin might match weathered window trim better.

Painting door handles because I took them off for buff/wax. They are very weathered.

Planning to use this paint. https://www.krylon.com/en/5xstronger

I have access to powder coating but don't want to take t6he time right now.

Might paint windshield wiper arms as well.

Thoughts?

If you want a sheen that looks totally factory, use SEM brand "Trim Black".

Thanks Chris If I ever take a van to off the showroom condition I'll keep that in mind.

I'm looking for here is paint that can get locally and put on which the function will first be utility and second so it looks decent.

I’m a fan of satin. Gloss will show every/any imperfection & flat just looks like cheap cast iron…

I did cheap rattle can black many years ago and it hasn’t held up well, so I’m interested in your
results with the Krylon “5x”. I’d been thinking about maybe have a go with epoxy paint next time…

Thanks for the reply. I'll update over the years as things go along.

I've used Rust-Oleum appliance epoxy pain before in various things and have been happy... When I went shopping for this paint, I noticed it that epoxy paint was specifically for indoor use. I have used it on outdoor applications and didn't remember having issues with it but the specific indoor intention on the can pointed me to try this krylon 5x paint and that others on here have had good luck with krylon paint on plastic parts.

I used Rust-Oleum Professional High Performance Enamel in satin or flat for everything, mainly because it's always available at the HD near my neighborhood. It holds up pretty well. I haven't done handles, though.

SEM trim black is the correct answer.
readily available at any autobody supply.
if for some reason this doesn't suit your needs, use a satin finish of your choice.

epoxy paint has very little to zero UV resistance.
dark colors especially will not do well in long term high UV exposures.

I used Wurth Satin Black, but the SEM is probably easier to get, actually.... :)
If buying the Paint seems scarce near you, Auto Body Toolmart is my go to mail order/on-line place for Spray Cans of SEM and other materials... 8)

Here is an online source for SEM paints.

I'm not sure exactly which one you seek, but it is a place to start if you don't have a local store that sells it.

not sure what makes "ulrta" ultra, but if it's better durability & and UV resistance, i'd consider it. the regular trim black in satin is what i have always used. the great thing about this stuff is that it lays down like glass! brush, roll, spray bomb...perfect finish. every time.

Part #39143 is all I've ever used, and it works great, just like borninabus said.

I wouldn't worry too much, you're just going to be doing them again in a few years anyway. Nothing really sticks to that aluminum. But it's only a few minutes to mask and paint anyhow. I've tried various different paints from "professional" to the FLAPS brands and they all chip/wear off in a while.

Actually, if you prep the aluminum well, the paint will stick really well. A good sanding, followed by some phosphoric acid (Alumaprep) will go a long way toward improving adhesion. I shot some properly prepped Vanagon handles, wipers, etc. with the SEM Trim Black about 10 years ago and it still looks great.

From SEM

1) What are the differences between 39143 vs 49143?

https://www.semproducts.com/product/trim-black/39143

https://www.semproducts.com/product/trim-black-ultra/49143

2) What sheen would 39143 be in 49133/43/53?

3) Any other considerations to keep in mind between the two?

Good morning Andy,

Thanks for contacting us about our products.

TRIM BLACK matches the raw plastic trim pieces on most American made vehicles for the past 20 + years. TRIM BLACK ULTRA is slightly darker and available in the 3 sheen levels to better match some of the foreign vehicle trims. The sheen for TRIM BLACK is the same as the satin version of TRIM BLACK ULTRA.

Thanks again

I love it when companies provide straightforward answers to product questions in less than 24 hours. Thanks for tracking this down.

I used SEM Trim paint on mine, followed with a good coat of Spray Max 2K satin clear coat. Held up perfectly for 3 or 4 years now. Not cheap, but great performance.

Would this paint be suitable for the (power) mirrors?
And would it also be suitable for the plastic grills?

skills@eurocarsplus Tue May 09, 2023 9:39 am

yes, it will be fine

however, i did SEM hot rod black on the mirrors. it's just more durable and seeing how they get cleaned from bugs etc often i felt it would hold up way better
