After enjoying some great riding this past weekend, I now know that I need to get a more comfortable seating position in my rail buggy. It's a small frame and currently has the poly high back seats in it. They are about 19" wide and practically touch each other. Can't really go with a wider single seat the way the frame was welded. 39" width-total-is about all I can go with.
Not only are they a little small in width, my long legs are scrunched up to the pedals. I don't really have the options of moving the welded pedals or setting the seats any further back due to a bar they rest on without a lot of cut-up work.
I've read some folks have been using PT cruiser seats for comfort. Anyone got experience with these?
I was thinking about removing the poly seats and building a bench seat out of wood and having my local uph shop make some cushions and covers for it. The bench would for sure give me more width to spread out in and maybe a couple extra inches of leg room. The way those poly seats are made, they kind of push your lower body forward.
Thoughts? Pictures? |

I widened my frame for better seats. This is in the middle of figuring it out. The upper tube used to follow the bottom tube.
Worth it.

Check craigslist and facebook marketplace for UTV seats. I have an RZR seat in my trike, and it's much more comfortable than a poly bucket seat, but not as bulky as a car seat. |

I'm in the same boat. I have the old poly shell seats. Ebay had rzr 1000 seats but amazon has new seats with sliders to adjust them. Down side is they are $370. I was hoping for a tried and true junkyard seat that others might have used and from vehicle to save some money. If I figure out anything I'll let ya know... |

Poly seats are brutal on the human body. I go to the wrecking yard and search through the smallest sporty cars to find some cool but small seats that will fit. They're super cheap and oh so comfy compared to poly spine breakers. Mounting however will take some work but it's well worth it. |

Just an update for you. The amazon seats are too wide at the top. The part of the seat up at your shoulder hangs out of the frame on my buggy and rubs on the passenger seat as well. I'm sending them back. My luck they'll bang off everything in the woods. I ordered a set just to see if they'd work. I don't want to spend the money but the Race Trim seats seem easy to install and would be a perfect fit for my buggy. |

Thanks for the ideas. My problem is mounting any type seat to the floor, in between the rails. I have a piece of wood in between the inside/outside rail for the poly seat to bolt to. I tried a 1995 jeep Wrangler seat a friend gave me. No fit.
There's just no easy way to mount seats and due to the head clearance with my top rails, I can't use a bracket that would raise a seat up any higher than I currently have.
I ended up re-drilling the floor and moving the seat back as far a possible for more legroom. I took most of my padding out of the seat bottom and back which helped get me further back from the pedals. Like many rail buggies, my seats rest up against a rear rail bar-which is good for support, but limits how far the seat can be moved back. If I were to relocate that bar, which would be a lot of work, any seat could be placed further back for more comfort of my legs.
It's tolerable. I am always looking out for another buggy to go with this one, and will for sure not get one with such a small frame. Wide padded seats will be in the one of my choice. |
