Good Eye M. Here is the ad for when it was for sale in 2023. The original ad was for $20k.

the ad from 2023 had a pic of it's mcode plate confirming it is a '65.

Always a shame to see OG paint disappear when some localized rust repair would have sufficed.

Agreed, its only original once.

Adding this thread here for future reference: Reproduction Westfalia SO-42/SO-44/Dormobile Pop-Top Seal

If you need a poptop weather seal, the one in the link below is the best one and most original looking on the market

Best option for the 65-67 Pop Top IMO

I measured it loose and it came out to 180 inches /15 feet. I am going to buy 16 feet to be on the safe side.

How many German delivered two-tone tin-tops are there? Seems like there aren't many..

Hi Brandon,
I commented about it on page 8. See below:
von_hansel wrote: I'm intrigued by tin-top SO42s that originally came two-tone. They are very uncommon and I know of three of them off the top of my head.

I believe all three are no port code Westys that were destined for North America with the typical solid windows, locking ignition, 523 paint code, and euro wall lights. Two of the three have early tent mounts for the privy and foyer tents

I'm sure there are more than three out there but with the lack of people commenting in the forums nowadays or sharing their mcode plate (which is understnadable) it might be hard to find a fourth.

Recently came across a hardtop 66 SO42 westy. I have never seen C98 as an mcode before. Thoughts??

Did it have a rack, ladder or side step? A42 wouldn't include a rack.

From mcode page for C98:
Seen on Tourist Delivery '66 Deluxe with rack, ladder, and side step
Seen on 1960 LHD 15-Window delivered to Japan

It has an HWE 3/4 rack that the seller said is original to the bus. It does not have a side step or a ladder. His Uncle bought it in the '70s. The seller doesn't know much about split window buses or westies. It's for sale on Spacebook.

I have seen C98 on several SO42 but they are all built in April or May '66. They all have UT export codes. I have no clue what it means other than what I read in this thread

1) For sale on erclassics.com C42 built on 4/04/66. The birth certificate states that mcode C98 is unidentifiable

2) A42 built on 4/21/66

3) Danny the Cop's C42 built on 5/06/66 (Srfndoc will have to post pics of this bus)

4) From an ad that Everett saved the photos to the gallery - B42 built on 5/27/66

5) Dockoas' B42 built on 5/27/66

6) Col_Forbin's B42 built on 5/27/66

It would be interesting to find out what exactly it means since it was seen on deluxes as well. Maybe the info is in one of the literature books Lind has?

Thanks for update on C98 mcode! Some more shots of the hardtop SO42

Here is 66 SO42 from https://www.erclassics.com/ mentioned earlier

The other bus von_hansel mentioned that has the C98 mcode owned by Danny:

What are the three you know of?

I had a '65 VG/BW no port code no westy Mcode SO42:

There was also this 66:

I haven't tried to keep track, just didn't know if you knew these two.

Hi Clara,
The three I know of is Lou's old one that is currently for sale and repainted, your old '65, and the '66 you posted. That is it.

Do you know where your '65 went? That is such a monster bus with it being no port code, locking ignition, tin top, two-tone, and mcoded for safaris

I can't remember where I saw a pic of the '66 after the pictures you posted of it at Woodburn, but it was in Gene Langan's collection in CT. Not sure if he still owns it. I spent an hour trying to find the picture but I couldn't.

We have an early 1965 SO42 pop top with tent and roof rack. There is no plate on either the cabinet or the bed. No holes no sign of any plate ever being there. A gentleman at last years Litchfield bug in, very knowledgeable about SO42's, thought it might be the first 65 in the states, before the had the plates. Any thoughts?

Can you post the mcode plate? Does the vin plate have 23-42 on it?

Looking at your gallery, your so42 has a slanted jump seat as well so definitely early.

Do you have Metal push buttons? Clamshell lights? BTW, Fabrik Nr. 2 is known and it had a tag so unless yours was the first one made, something else may have happened (laminate re-skin?).
