Is there anyone that can shine a light on the use of the frame number on a chassis(not the vin...)? |

I'm not sure what you're asking and the photo you posted yesterday isn't showing. the number on the frame tunnel should match the one on the vin plate. by 'use of the frame number' do you mean using it to register the car? |

On a vw..
The whole car is identified with the vin nr - Stamped on the tunnel and type plate and used to register the car itself on a licenseplate. The frame nr can been seen as the engine nr, front beam nr, gearbox nr, key nr and is to identify the part itself.. A NOS chassis has no VIN nr stamped but only a frame nr as that is used at VW to register it as a part. It is not used to register it as a car.
Frame nr is to be found on a split near the vin nr, 90° stamped in the tunnel or on the crossmeber left side rear of the pan. |

On my October 1949 the frame number was stamped perpendicular to the chassis number under the rear seat.
I've also seen them IIRC on the tunnel around the e-brake/shifter area. |

I meant the extra number, not the vin ;) |

Is it possible to accurately date the chassis by this number? |
