not sure why nobody has responded, so I will stick an oar in and hopefully provoke some reaction.
the colour seems to be a semi-gloss grey/blue as in this photo

and I would assume that as the early buses were made at wolfsburg that the tanks could be painted the same as oval ones. so looking in the oval thread for the answer opened another rabbit hole! lots of versions of L29 :? https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...;start=160
however on page 9 sweden states - There are different colors depending on the year.
- 1951 april itīs painted in the same color as the body.
1951 may to 1955 July it's dark blue-gray.
After 1955 august 6 it's light blue-gray.

if it were me I would start with ral 5008 grey blue (semi gloss) and adjust it as necessary to get close to the photo above

Dupont DS 174 is what i used for my 60 beetle tank. It is a stock dupont color and i matched it by eye from the tank bottom that was under the undercoating. Its a 99% match. It looks lighter or darker depending on the lighting.

Im not sure if Barndoor era/ ribbed door oval tanks are the exact same color, That might give you a good starting point. Hope this helps
