We all are aware that everything comes printed with dates on them, use by or sell by dates.

My Son in Law is a date fiend and is forever checking dates on food items.

I've no problem having "fresh" beer for him but hate throwing away good "food".

In my way of thinking...... it is alcohol for goodness sake. Granted a lower content level but ........

Higher proof liqueurs keep for ages, does beer really expire?

I wouldn't know about "expiry dates" on beer myself.

Sounds like your son in law needs to bring his own beer. I'd keep the oldest ones around to freak him out, sooner or later he'll get the message.

A lot of beers have "fresh by" or "drink me by" dates on them, rather than "expires on".

It doesn't really go bad, in the sense that it turns or becomes unsafe to consume. But the flavor will slowly change as time goes on.

I would also think canned beer will remain shelf stable longer than glass, but don't know that for certain.

Its called "skunk beer" around here. And YES, if you drink enough good beer, you can taste the difference, especially in the aluminum canned beer. My brother who is in his 70s can tell you when a beer is past drink by. It aint rocket science but it is knowing what is GOOD and drinking a lot of it.

As noted, beer doesn't become unsafe after it expires, but the taste and smell does turn nasty (metallic/stale or skunky, depending on the type of beer).

I just threw out a bunch of Corona from last two kids graduation in 2015. It was a funky dark orange colour

Back in the mid '80s I bought three bugs that were sitting for years. a '62 rag top, a '63 sunroof baja and a '65 standard. They were rusted beyond help but...there was a six pack of Michelob in the '65. I put those suckers in the fridge, the beer was clear with no sediment in the bottles, cracked the open when they got cold and had a slow pour into glasses. They tasted nothing like Michelob but more like a fine craft brew.

Everything and everyone has an expiration date!

They say light exposure is a factor with creating skunk beer. Even clear bottles vs darker. The solution is to drink it faster.

So my couple of cans of Billy Beer and JR Ewing Beer would taste crappy? They weren't exactly premium beers to begin with.

This might be a little funky at this point. Was a little funky back in the day

Quote: BRUSSELS — The guardians of Champagne will let no one take the name of the bubbly beverage in vain, not even a U.S. beer behemoth.

For years, Miller High Life has used the "Champagne of Beers" slogan. This week, that appropriation became impossible to swallow.

At the request of the trade body defending the interests of houses and growers of the northeastern French sparkling wine, Belgian customs crushed more than 2,000 cans of Miller High Life advertised as such.

Apparently Kid Rock and Belgium are not fans crappy beer these days. About time. Would anyone watch me shoot rough toilet paper with my HK G3?

It does expire. hops loose their bite and eventually the beer turns into a geyser and gets nasty.

Thanks for the replies!

Obviously I'm not a big beer drinker.
I think I'll go through my inventory and purge the older brews. Beer is actually good for grass and for grub control.

If while clearing those out, you find some that aren't years and years old, you can also use them to make beer bread. Super simple to make.

The more concerning part about this is beer is pretty acidic, which can easily degrade that thin plastic liner inside an aluminum can given “X” amount of time. Which can’t be a healthy thing.

Side note: If you’re interested in how edible expired food is, check out “MREsteve” on YouTube. That guy has eaten 150 year old MRE’s and gives food reviews. It’s wild.

Thanks Malokin Martin,

Works great for killings slugs, too. Take an old pie tin and dig it down into the dirt so the lip is at ground level, then fill the tin with crappy beer. Slugs are attracted to the smell, nd will die in the pool.
