Does the brake line from the fluid reservoir to the master cylinder go above or below the steering rod? (Photos if possible.)

It goes under the tie rod. I couldn't find any pictures in the repair manual but I found this in the '56 owners manual (never mind the arrows, they're talking about grease points):

Thank for that. The previous owner used fuel hose above the tie rod and it finally failed after 12 years.

12 years? That sounds like a decent piece of fuel hose. I was using a piece of fuel hose on mine, just temporarily while the body was off, and it started deteriorating and leaking within a month.

Question about the hard line that goes from the reservoir into the top of the master cylinder ...

Is that a special line or can I just cut a piece to fit? How does it seal to the master cylinder? It just presses into the rubber? There's got to be something else securing and sealing the metal line...

Most shops sell that line pretty cheap, or you can cut a piece to fit yourself. If you make it yourself, they're about 9.5"(24cm) long and one end is flared.

The rubber plug has a step on it that fits into a groove in the MC which secures the plug. The flared end of the line keeps it from pulling out of the plug ... and the plug is tight. Kinda a pain the ass to get in, kinda a pain in the ass to get out.

You should have the brake line, a rubber plug, and a little washer. Washer goes into MC first, then slide the plug over the line and push them into the MC together, flared end into the MC.

Thank you kindly. I cut a line that I had to fit, but it's the washer that I'm missing. I don't see that on Wolfsburg West brake diagram ... Hmm ...

I think it gets left out a lot. Not sure how important it is.

From a '56 parts book. Item 47 PN: 113611811

Kinda expensive for a washer

Thanks. I have the wrong rubber plug. The diameter is quite a bit wider than the proper one. I got the correct one and will see if that fixes the leak while I source the washer.

I was also told that the hard line itself should have a slightly larger flare than just a normal brake line, so if it still leaks I'll just order the proper line from WW.

Thanks for helping and for letting me resurrect this thread. Hope it helps someone else down the line.

reading this it would seem to me if the brake line went over the tie rod you would basicly captured your front end :-) you would have to remove the brake line to ever get the front end off ???

for serviceability you want it under ??? is what im thinking .

Does anyone know of a source for new #47 small gasket that goes into the master cylinder first (white gasket in the photo above) before the metal line and plug get inserted? I don't think I've ever seen that small gasket before? Hopefully someone can share a source?

Googled the part number (113611811) and came up with a couple results.

Heritage Stocks
https://heritagestocks.com/product/113611811-washer-plug-line-6mm/

eBay

I don't know if anything would happen if it's not installed. I'm not even sure of its purpose ... the only thing I can think of is that it keeps the line from sealing on the master cylinder???
