View original topic: Bent spindle on super beetle

I think I have a bent spindle. The tire is rubbing the spring on the drivers side. The passenger side is fine. It has about 3/4' of space on the passenger side. I have swapped the two front tire - no change. I measured the distance from the drums to the strut body. The top of the drum on the driver side is about 1/2" closer to the strut body. The camber on the drive side is -2.1. Its a 73 super beetle. Stock wheels and 165 80 15 tires. Should I replace the spindle? Anyone know any other way of verifying if the spindle is bent?

Sounds bent to me.

Do you have the early or late suspension? I have committed a pair of late suspension spindles to a friend (though I may still have a pair beyond that), but I have an early suspension spindle you can have for the cost of shipping. I know it's good because it was working on my previous car until I switched to the later style suspension.

if its the early style ( with the 3 bolt ball joint) the spindle and strut love to rust together if you're in certain parts of the country....and the strut is more likely to bend at its base than the spindle is...so try to buy a strut/spindle combo to save yourself some problems

My wife would beg to differ. If it's the early style, I have the part for sure. Like I said, one of my previous cars had the early style suspension and I swapped it out so I could use a set of coilovers made from VW Caddy coilovers. I've owned 6 Supers so I'm PRETTY sure I have a set beyond the committed set. If EMPI makes Super Beetle disc brake spindles (I've written to them and asked..since they're on a spindle kick right now) I'll buy a set in a heartbeat...and will have another set of late spindles available.

H2OSB - I have the older 3 bolt style spindles. I sent you a PM.
