View original topic: New Alternator - the pully is too far to the rear to align

Hey Guys and Gals - I bought an alternator kit for my 73 beetle 1914 cc from Mid America. Installed, the alternator pully doesn't align with my Scat crank pully. It's too far towards the rear of the car so shims won't help. I tried shaving the spacer between the alternator and pully but can't take anymore off before the pully will scrape against the alt. It's off about 1/8 th of an inch. It is right now wearing my belt - lots of black dust on the pully. Does anyone make an adjustable pully in both directions? Thanks in advance for any help. - Roy

Is the ALT pushed all the way back? With Generators you have to smack them back for proper alignment the china import ones are too long and make fitment a real issue.

Had this problem with a CB billet alternator pulley and CB aluminum crank pulley. No amount of adjusting the tins and shroud would correct it.

We used a "sand seal spacer" on the crank to move the crank pulley rearward. It did the trick.

Yup or you can grind the stand down to move it back then the fan is rubbing total circus act.

Post a pic showing the alignment and the pulley placement on the alternator shaft.

The conversion from generator to alternator requires a different stand. Did you replace the stand?
Here is a pic showing how the alternator stand is cut away to allow for the larger diameter "belt/body" at the rear end of the alternator to fit over the support.

Notice how wide the generator stand (left) is while the rear portion of the alternator stand (right) has been cut away to allow room for the larger diameter portion of the alternator case.

The alternator stand will support either an alternator or a generator. But you cannot use an alternator on a generator stand. It ends up pushing the pulley too far rearward and the pulleys will never line up.

Yes, used the new stand that came with the new alternator. I'm going to try the crank pully spacer to see if that works. - Thanks Glenn

I've heard that some of the new alternators are longer, but this one was a genuine Bosch AL82N.

The tins were Scat, not OE so maybe it was the backing plates.
